or 40 years Star Wars has grabbed the imagination of thousands, being the brains of George Lucas, a franchise that has explored the depths of a galaxy far, far away is now coming to a close. A Saga that is a 9-Part story, and there was me thinking that the story of Star Wars was told after the defeat of the Emperor near the end of Episode VI, Return of the Jedi.
Lucas Film Ltd, now under the control of Disney, has rejuvenated the franchise and has made it more appealing towards a younger audience. However, the films have been greeted with somewhat mixed opinions, as for I; I wasn’t overly keen on Episode VII, The Force Awakens as I got the genuine impression that it was a remake of Episode VI, A New Hope.
Though I did enjoy Episode VIII, The Last Jedi. Whilst others did not. Today Disney/Lucas Film Ltd unveiled the title for its concluding Episode in what has been described as a “three-act” saga that has spanned across nine films. Fans from across the world were treated to the revelation at this year’s Star Wars Celebration in Chicago.
Director Abrams confirmed that Episode IX doesn’t pick up straight after the events of The Last Jedi, like the previous films it takes place a few years after its predecessor. In this case, it’s a year after the Resistance escaped the clutches of dreaded First Order.
He also went onto add, “One of the great things about the movie was the dynamic between the characters. They are the most wonderful, and that’s the thing I’m most looking forward for you to seeing.”
John Boyega (Finn), “On this adventure, I think Finn has found his footing and his identity within the resistance.” He also went onto add that Captain Phasma is dead and is no longer in the franchise after their duel in the climactic scene in The Last Jedi. I, however, am finding this difficult to believe and that only having her briefly in Episode VIII and then killed off is somewhat poor, they did it with Obi-Wan Kenobi in Episode IV, however, the character was more prominent in the other two sequels, but as a spirit. I think the whole subject of Phasma being killed is a red herring.
Billy Dee Williams was also present on the panel, which confirmed that he would be reprising his role of Lando Calrissian, who was last seen in Return of the Jedi. He was also joined by new cast member; Naomi Ackie. Who will be playing the character Jannah, I have a feeling she might be one of the Knights of Ren.
Episode IX, however, will feature Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia Organa. Upon questioning, Abrams confirmed that unused footage from The Force Awakens would be used for this instalment of everyone’s favourite Saga.
Though, throughout the whole panel I was waiting for the big moment, a moment that I’ve been waiting for since January, a title and maybe a trailer. And what did we get? Both! The room faded into darkness and the teaser trailer was unveiled. I won't say much about it, I’ll let you our audience, decide. However, hearing a certain laugh and seeing the remnants of an old vehicle made me gasp.
Star Wars, Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker is due to be released in December 2019.
